General Information
Description of ServiceOn Oct. 1, 2013, the Defense Health Agency was established by the Secretary of Defense. The DHA is responsible for driving greater integration of clinical and business processes across the Military Health System (MHS), implementing shared services with common measurement of outcomes, enabling rapid adoption of proven practices, helping reduce unwanted variation, and improving the coordination of care across time and treatment venues.

In short – the Agency is tasked with making military medicine stronger, better and more relevant for the future.

As a designated Combat Support Agency, the DHA is also responsible for meeting the medical needs of the combatant commanders. Central to this role is to ensure our service members are medically ready to perform their mission, and our military medical personnel are ready to perform their mission – “Medically Ready Force…Ready Medical Force.”

The DHA is responsible for ten shared services that are listed below.

4. TRICARE Health Plan

6. Budget and Resource Management
7. Contracting/Procurement
8. Public Health
9. Medical Education and Training
10. Medical Research and Development

The DHA is a Combat Support Agency supporting the Military Services. The DHA supports the delivery of integrated, affordable, and high quality health services to beneficiaries of the MHS, and executes responsibility for shared services, functions, and activities of the MHS and other common clinical and business processes in support of the Military Services. The DHA serves as the program manager for the TRICARE health plan, medical resources, and the market manager for the National Capital Region (NCR) enhanced Multi-Service Market.
