General Information
Description of ServiceThe Veterans Health Administration (VHA) Vet Centers are a type of VA health care facility designed to provide outreach and readjustment counseling services through 232 community-based Vet Centers located in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Guam, Puerto Rico, American Samoa, and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Services are also available for their family members for military related issues. Veterans have earned these benefits through their service and all are provided at no cost to the Veteran or family. Readjustment counseling is wide range of services provided to combat veterans in the effort to make a satisfying transition from military to civilian life.

Vet Centers can assist veterans and their family members toward a successful post-war adjustment in their community with the following services:
  • Readjustment counseling,
  • Couples/marital counseling,
  • Family counseling,
  • Substance abuse information and referral,
  • Group readjustment counseling,
  • Military sexual trauma counseling and referral,
  • Referral for benefits assistance,
  • Job counseling and referral,
  • Community education,
  • Networking and referrals,
  • Bereavement counseling (some locations),
  • Medical referrals,
  • Crisis intervention,
  • Assistance in applying for VA Benefits.

In addition, VSO's (Veteran Service Organizations) can assist you as well by answering general questions and even petitioning on your behalf for services they believe you are qualified to receive.
Helpful TipsVet Centers do not require enrollment in the VHA Health Care System.

EligibilityVeterans are eligible if they served on active duty in a combat theater during World War II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, the Gulf War, or the campaigns in Lebanon, Grenada, Panama, Somalia, Bosnia, Kosovo, Afghanistan, Iraq and the Global War on Terror. Veterans, who served in the active military during the Vietnam-era, but not in the Republic of Vietnam, must have requested services at a Vet Center before Jan. 1, 2004.
