General Information
Description of ServiceEducational and Career Counseling Services

Free Educational and Career Counseling (Chapter 36) services are provided to transitioning Service members who are:
  • Within six months prior to discharge from active duty.
  • Within one year following discharge from active duty.
  • Current beneficiaries of educational assistance under Chapters 30, 31, 32, 33, 35, 1606, 1607.
  • Veterans and qualified dependents who are eligible for and have entitlement to education assistance under Chapters 30, 31, 32, 33, 35, 1606, 1607.

Services include:
  • Counseling to facilitate career decision making for civilian or military occupations.
  • Educational and career counseling to choose an appropriate civilian occupation and develop a training program.
  • Academic and adjustment counseling to resolve barriers that impede success in training or employment.


CareerScope

In addition to Career Counseling, the Department of Veterans Affairs provides the interest and aptitude assessment tool known as CareerScope at no cost to all eligible benefit recipients. CareerScope has been used frequently by Veterans to determine the best career path for transition to civilian life.

Whether you wish to pursue education and training in a field you already know, or you wish to branch out to other fields that interest you, CareerScope can help. With CareerScope you will be provided with an assessment of your interests and aptitudes, and given recommendations about which careers you may enjoy and be successful doing, and what courses or training programs you should focus on to pursue those careers.

Intake ProcedureApply for your VA benefits at your Local Regional Offices: VA regional offices can assist you with filing the appropriate VA forms.Also, to apply for a specific benefit, visit Applying for Benefits. In addition, VSO's (Veteran Service Organizations) can assist you as well by answering general questions and even petitioning on your behalf for services they believe you are qualified to receive.
Intake RequirementsTo apply for free counseling services please complete and return the form found at the website.
Helpful TipsTwo hundred VA Vocational Rehabilitation and Employment counselors are now available at 71 military bases to assist transitioning Servicemembers with civilian employment.

The educational institute of your choice may have a Veteran Coordinator available to assist you with your educational needs. When researching schools, call to set up an appointment with their Veteran Coordinator.
