General Information
Description of ServiceCoast Guard Mutual Assistance (CGMA) is a tax-exempt organization of Coast Guard people assisting the entire Coast Guard family, including active duty, retired military, Coast Guard civilian employees, Coast Guard Reserve, Coast Guard Auxiliary, Public Health Service officers serving with the Coast Guard, and surviving family members.

Most assistance is provided through interest-free loans and personal grants. Education assistance programs support members and dependents in their pursuit of academic goals. Other types of assistance include emergency travel, temporary living expenses, funeral expenses, loss of funds or property, disaster relief, medical and dental expenses, home studies expenses for adoptions, and debt management. There is also a Layette Program to welcome infants.

Intake ProcedureAny eligible person may request assistance from CGMA by contacting a CGMA Representative (Coast Guard service personnel may also contact one of the other Military Aid Societies or the American Red Cross for emergency assistance when they are unable to apply through CGMA) and completing the appropriate application for assistance. Contact your local Coast Guard Mutual Assistance Representative for additional information.

EligibilityWith only a few exceptions, almost everyone associated with the U.S. Coast Guard is eligible to request assistance from Coast Guard Mutual Assistance on behalf of themselves or their immediate family members.

Eligibility under special circumstances may apply in certain situations. Additional eligibility limitations and guidelines specific to each type of assistance may also apply.
