Mercy Medical AngelsMercy Medical Angels (MMA)-sponsored charitable medical transportation system exists to benefit millions of Americans living in poverty and/or living in rural or small town areas who lack the financial means to travel to distant medical specialists for essential care and treatment. Their future health or recovery depends on overcoming the distance-related medical access challenge. MMA administers multiple programs that serve financially-stressed patients requiring transportation throughout the United States. MMA accomplishes these programs using one or more of the modes of transportation described below.
    • Commercial Airline Tickets - MMA administers charitable or deep-discount airline ticket programs for patients and patient escorts in cooperation with the major U.S. airlines.
    • Volunteer Pilot Operations -Volunteer pilots who own or rent small aircraft are available to patients and an escort needing transportation for medical evaluation, diagnosis or treatment. Patients must be ambulatory.
    • Long Distance Ground Transportation - MMA’s ground transportation program includes transport by the provision of commercial bus or Amtrak tickets, or the provision of gas cards if a friend can drive or an automobile is available.
    • National Patient Travel Helpline - MMA also operates the National Patient Travel Helpline® which provides information about all forms of charitable, long-distance medical transportation and provides referrals to all appropriate sources of help available in the national charitable medical transportation network.
    • Disaster Response - While MMA’s primary mission is providing transportation for financially-stressed patients, MMA also maintains a disaster response component which is called the Homeland Security Emergency Air Transportation System® (HSEATS). The HSEATS® system is designed to respond to small local disasters or major national disasters when government/commercial resources are not available.

Specialized Services, NuVisions CenterThrough the Specialized Service program, we offer transportation to medical appointments and essential community resources. This is a door-to-door service insuring the visually impaired person reaches their destination and returns home safely. If necessary, the driver will escort the client to their appointment and help them read and complete any necessary forms. In addition, we provide transportation to our low vision and diabetic support groups that are held once a month. Our support services encompass a variety of activities from organizing shopping lists and household items to reading mail and assisting the client to pay bills. We may refer clients to other agencies that can provide them with additional needed services. We help our clients adjust to vision loss by helping them with everyday tasks; such as, putting a white plate on a dark colored place mat or organizing their canned goods if they cannot read the labels.
