Family Services of Western Pennsylvania Clozaril/Clozapine ClinicThe Outpatient Clozaril Clinic is designed for individuals in service who are prescribed Clozaril/Clozapine medication. There is a risk of agranulocytosis, a potentially life-threatening adverse effect that can cause a drop in WBC (white blood cell count), decreasing an individual’s ability to fight infection. When it is determined to be medically necessary to prescribe Clozaril/Clozapine, baseline bloodwork must be obtained. Once medication is started, weekly monitoring of bloodwork is required for the first six months of treatment, then bi-weekly for six months, followed by monthly monitoring thereafter. Individuals are seen monthly by a nurse for assessment of psychiatric symptoms, side effects, signs of infection, adherence, vital signs and general stability. Bloodwork is obtained and a one month supply of medication is provided. Individuals are also followed medically by the psychiatrist on a regular basis. Bloodwork results are reviewed by MD, nurse and pharmacist and reported to the national registry.AlleghenyBehavioral Health ServicesFamily Services of Western Pennsylvania
