Pittsburgh Disability Employment Project for FreedomPittsburgh Disability Employment Project for Freedom provides a business directed training resulting in competitive employment for people with disabilities. Project for Freedom is a 10-week training program followed by a 2-week job shadow/internship experience. The training is focused on beginner to intermediate level computer skills, call center support, job search and professional skills. Students are evaluated for employment opportunities based on both hard skills related to their potential profession and soft skills such as communication, interpersonal skills, work ethic, and leadership. The purpose of this program is placement in unsupported competitive employment. Goals include:
  • Learn valuable customer service skills (NO collections/telemarketing), Windows 7, Microsoft Office, computer security and more.
  • Develop soft skills for workplace success: critical thinking, problem solving, communication, attitude, teamwork and ethics.

Tip of the Arrow FoundationThe Tip of the Arrow Foundation is a volunteer organization staffed by highly experienced career counselors. Our target is U.S. veterans of the Global War on Terror. Our aim is to help you transition to civilian work life successfully. Most or our consultants are veterans themselves and have faced a transition similar to the one on which you are embarking. We will provide you with one-on-one coaching and guidance to help you navigate the entire process of finding and entering your next career. In addition, we have cultivated relationships with potential employers in both the private and government sectors to help clear the path toward achieving your desired job. Tip of the Arrow counselors will be on post during your stay with the demobilization company, available to meet with you and get you started on the job search process. If you do not have time to do this while going through demob, do not worry! You will always have someone to call after you return home. That is our commitment to you. The counselor to whom you are assigned will be available by phone 24/7. No other transition service available to veterans offers the same level of support. Your Tip of the Arrow counselor will work with you to:
  • Take an inventory of marketable skills,
  • Build an effective, attention-getting resumé,
  • Develop job search strategies and skills,
  • Prepare for interviews,
  • Debrief after each interview,

The law established a priority of service requirement applicable to all Department of Labor programs offering employment and training related services for veterans. The Key to Career Success campaign is sponsored by the U.S. Department of Labor through the Career One-Stop Pathways to Career Success Web site: www.careeronestop.org/MilitaryTransition. The Key to Career Success campaign connects veterans and transitioning service members with high quality career planning, training, and job search resources available at local One-Stop Career Centers. Employment and training services are provided to veterans through a nationwide network of approximately 3,000 One-Stop Career Centers. United States Department of Veterans Affairs - Homeless Veterans Program: Employment ProgramsThe United States Department of Veterans Affairs is committed to ending Veteran homelessness by the end of 2015. No one who has served our country should ever go without a safe, stable place to call home. The entire department has put its energy and resources into ending Veteran homelessness. VA's programs provide individualized, comprehensive care to Veterans who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless. VA is dedicated to helping homeless Veterans and Veterans at risk of homelessness secure and maintain employment leading to increased residential and personal stability. Our goal is to afford Veterans the opportunity to return to healthy, productive lifestyles within their own communities.
  • Homeless Veteran Supported Employment Program The Homeless Veteran Supported Employment Program (HVSEP) provides vocational assistance, job development and placement, and ongoing supports to improve employment outcomes among homeless Veterans and Veterans at-risk of homelessness. Formerly homeless Veterans who have been trained as Vocational Rehabilitation Specialists (VRSs) provide these services.
  • Compensated Work Therapy (CWT) Program VA’s Compensated Work Therapy (CWT) Program is a national vocational program comprised of three unique programs which assist homeless Veterans in returning to competitive employment: Sheltered Workshop, Transitional Work, and Supported Employment. Veterans in CWT are paid at least the federal or state minimum wage, whichever is higher. VA's National Cemetery Administration and Veterans Health Administration have also formed partnerships at national cemeteries, where formerly homeless Veterans from the CWT program have received work opportunities.
  • Vocational Rehabilitation and Employment (VR&E) VetSuccess Program The Vocational Rehabilitation and Employment (VR&E) VetSuccess Program assists Veterans with service-connected disabilities to prepare for, find, and keep suitable jobs. Services that may be provided include: Comprehensive rehabilitation evaluation to determine abilities, skills, and interests for employment; employment services; assistance finding and keeping a job; and On the Job Training (OJT), apprenticeship, and non-paid work experiences.

USA CaresUSA Cares provides financial and advocacy assistance to post 9/11 active duty US military service personnel, veterans and their families. They assist all branches of service and all ranks and components. They do not charge fees nor accept repayment and rely on donations from private citizens, businesses and foundations for all funding. Financial assistance is not given directly to service members or their families; instead, payments are made to mortgage lenders, utility companies, and other vendors. The objective is to reach families at the earliest stage of intervention to proactively prevent further financial distress. Typically, USA Cares provides assistance in four major areas:
  • Emergency Assistance - pays immediate, essential bills, including food and utility bills,
  • Housing Assistance – helps to stop and prevent evictions and foreclosures,
  • Combat Injured - pays basic expenses: mortgage/rent, food and home utilities which enables combat injured to receive treatment and be assured their family is taken care of,
  • Jobs Assistance – reduce unemployment among post-9/11 Veterans through job-seeker tools, open to all veterans, limited financial assistance.

The Vocational Service Program provides a variety of employment services to veterans. Evaluation Services consisting of both standardized psychometric testing, job simulation and other situation-specific opportunities are available to assess the veteran's skill levels, aptitudes, abilities, and interests. Job Seeking and Job Survival Skills Training include one-on-one counseling for developing effective employment strategies.     • Combines a residential therapeutic community of peer and professional support, with a strong emphasis on increasing personal responsibility.
